Cranberry Sauce The Thanksgiving staple which started it all. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter For centuries, the cranberry was considered solely a seasonal fruit, until an enterprising lawyer-turned-grower named Marcus L. Urann, one of our Cooperative’s founders, realized that the berries he harvested exceeded demand. He hated to waste any of them, so he created a tasty sauce that preserved them. He canned it in 1912 and called it Ocean Spray. In 1930, he joined with his fellow growers John Makepeace and Elizabeth Lee to form the Ocean Spray Cooperative and the rest is history. The “log,” or jellied cranberry sauce we know today, first became available nationwide in 1941. Ocean Spray sells approximately 86.4 million cans of cranberry sauce each year. The holiday season, September to December, makes up 80 percent of our total sauce business. Ocean Spray produces one can of cranberry sauce per US family per year. We offer our sauce in whole berry, jellied and Cran-Raspberry® versions, but the iconic log remains the most preferred by American consumers.
